Seeking and hanging out in the higher realms is not fundamentally wrong. It has been practiced for aeons by human kind. Tribes have used hallucinogenic herbs to visit other realms almost as casually as we use alcohol in our culture. Yet they were close to nature. They lived a life of intense physicality, and were much more aware of their bodies as they lived and died by being in such close proximity to the earth and the elements and their ability to be in harmony with it. Our ancestors also ate only natural foods from their surrounding environments and drank water from natural sources unpolluted by industry.
A spirituality was born from this close connection to nature and surviving it’s unpredictable and often hostile changeability. Spirituality was intimately threaded through the chores of daily life, such as hunting, growing crops, keeping livestock and preparing food.
Communing with the spirit world, higher beings, underworlds, became a natural extension of this survival. Being attuned to messages from other dimensions and blessings from other beings could sometimes mean the difference between life and death. Perhaps knowing when to plant seeds after a frost or understanding the cause of an illness, could be aided by a practice of following moon cycles, or from divination or indeed an attunement through journeying or visiting the local medicine man/woman.
There was no modern medicine or weather apps on the I Phone or excel spreadhseets.
Now, we live in an age where the beauty of this connection to our original innocence is but a faint memory to most and has been all but trashed by a system that is now out of control. Its unfettered growth is destroying our planet. Many important eco systems are teetering on the edge, with industrial, economic and consumer growth celebrated, whilst oceans polluted, forests burnt and land poisoned with chemicals to make way for our throw away, fast food culture. Human kind is hurtling towards the edge of a cliff.
Yet in these complex and modern times, the carefully fabricated lies of the media, education, religions, politicians keeps us hooked into this world of falsity and lack consciousness. It preys upon our core wounds, and keeps us in a straight-jacket of false beliefs which imprison us from truly seeing the innate value of our imperfections. This avoidance of what is, and papering over with delusions literally poisons our minds.
It’s no wonder our egos, then take over this role so it becomes internalized, and anchored in to our sense of self and being.
I guess this process starts even before birth. We take on our parents and ancestors foibles, thoughts and beliefs. Then we are inundated by both school and religious conditioning to be good and pure, to take on a mask of social propriety, while all the natural impulses and pure connections to Source are layered over further. As we progress through the education system we graduate and soon find ourselves keeping up with the Jones’, under further subtle and invisible pressure to maintain these lies.
It’s absolutely no wonder that the majority of spiritual practices would be reflected in this social, mental and emotional fragmentation. It’s completely unsurprising that our spirituality is not an embodied reconnection to our true Source, to our original nature. It is completely unsurprising that it tends to be an escape route, an emotional spiritual bypass of cosmic proportions to avoid the pain of all this.

Event – Trigger – Pain – Adjustment – Desensitisation – Habitualisation
Behind each trigger lurks an ‘old shipwrecked feeling’ that has become an island to itself, denied, buried and covered in barnacles.
Chances are that you have more than likely formed habitual desensitisation (numbing) or hyperstimulation (over excitement) towards it, in order NOT to feel it and the gold contained within this buried treasure trove in the depths of your psyche;
In essence, you have, in all probability, created a bypass (addiction or spiritual practice!) – a go-around – a self soothing technique – a silo or man-made reservoir so to speak, to disconnect the synapses of your cognition from the original experience in order to distance yourself from such a potentially annihilating experience.
Such incidents would have severely disrupted your tender body-ego-mind from forming a STABLE sense of GROUND, within which to create and recognise your sense of SELF in your delicate forming psyche.
However, in forming these partitions, to protect yourself, you layer over your delicate psyche with distorted filters which remove you from the full flow of Source flowing within you.
The perpetuation of this bypassing forms deep grooves, which blinker you to the full reality in which you live. As you recover and desire to address these blind spots, it is just as common in alternative spirituality as it is in mainstream coping methods to make the same error.
Whether you are using cigarettes or the latest crystals or yoga pose, chances are your PAINBODY has surreptitiously co-opted you into thinking that your latest adjustment has magically absolved you of your original deficit or trauma.
Sadly, addressing the pain body, the addictions, distortions and painful cycles it clings to, is a process that none of these attempts actually address.
The majority of techniques, seem to unconsciously re-enforce the original adjustments in order to prevent you from feeling your sense of desolation from the IMPACT of the original incident.
This is all the more difficult to delve into because to the well adjusted ego of an adult mind, the fall out of the original incident now appears minimal even risible.
BECAUSE to experience these original feelings can result in severe ego disintegration if not carefully managed.
Therefore, in order to protect your fragile and sensitive psyche and sense of self, your PAIN BODY, creates adjustments, or indeed a subpersonality to keep you from experiencing this original rupture or injury to the CORE SELF.
This ADJUSTMENT may have originally been a great coping mechanism to a glaring parenting deficit, a shock, a trauma or just something that was discretely passed down without your wherewithal.
It subsequently became an automated part of your character formation and enmeshed into your limbic and proprioceptive nervous system, which automates as much of your daily activities for efficiencies sake so you don’t keep having to learn how to brush your teeth 😉 as well as regulating your emotions.
So, its actually not your FAULT that you act out on your adjustments as HABITS. It’s rather a fascinating hand-me-down or indeed a design fault which we must learn to work with and master.
Cultivating your moment to moment embodied AWARENESS is a potent way that you can start to realise that you NOW have a choice in that split second between stimulus and response.
Secondly, being authentic and real can enable you to break down the masks you have constructed to save ‘face’ and thus enable you to receive the support you truely need…
So it starts here…noticing and feeling and being real and finding safe spaces, people and places in which to feel the original feelings and release them AND THE PATTERNS THAT HAVE BECOME EMBEDDED AROUND THEM.
So each time you are triggered and you act out or you react or you self soothe through distractions or addictions to desensitise yourself or reach for a dopamine hit -you are in actual fact making a choice on a very subliminal level.
As you notice your fetters and explore what’s underneath those things that bind you to limiting yourself – you open up gateways of energy for authentic connection, sharing and healing both within yourself, others and the universe.
You literally set yourself on a path of self liberation

Are you on the ADDICTION merry-go-round?
Are you using general busy-ness, TV, alcohol, sex, sugar, porn, overeating, caffeine, nicotine, illegal stimulants, new age healing or even social media to desensitise yourself.
I do.
WE USE ADJUSTMENTS TO DESENSITISE OURSELVES FROM PAIN.
Not all are bad or wrong.
In gestalt psychotherapy, we call this inevitable and intrinsic human gift ~ a creative adjustment.
It is at the very heart of our humanity and what makes us successful as a species.
We have the unique ability to manage chaos, adversity and create opportunities and prosper through this uncanny ability TO ADJUST and meet our NEEDS.
However, when an adjustment becomes habitual and locked in when other more suitable adjustments are viable, and masks meeting the true need, it is no longer a creative adjustment.
At this stage, it tends to fly under your radar as a CONSCIOUSLY CHOSEN RESPONSE to life and becomes UNCONSCIOUS.
So in effect, you are no longer in control of yourself.
Whether it’s using stimulants like sugar or black tea to soothe yourself, which then become habitual or social media/film binging or even excessive exercise it doesn’t matter. It’s all the same. It’s all about desensitisation and avoidance.
So I think it goes a bit like this following sequence:
There is an incident which triggers you – which brings up discomfort or pain – you block off the pain – using a stimulant such as say scrolling through FB to desensitise you – you disembody to reduce contact with the pain – you then form a habit out of this – your nervous system lays down pathways to record this activity and it then becomes habitual whenever the pain begins to arise again as the root has never been addressed.
You literally mistake this dopamine hit from the sugar or social media ‘likes’ or scrolling as a form of self-soothing or as the nourishment needed to rebalance yourself from the pain.
So in essence, you are seeking succour for healing the pain…
All very innocent and well intentioned.
The problem is our society is founded on the practice of teaching our bodies and nervous systems from children, the cheap thrill techniques that bypass feeling, expressing, sharing AND seeking support.
The body knows this doesn’t hit the spot.
So a sense of lack builds and builds around the desensitisation habit. It is literally like eating a MacDonalds and still being hungry….because we are being starved of the NOURISHMENT we desire but have deceived ourselves of true nourishment around the original NEED.
This NEED is around getting completion which may involve receiving an empathic ear, affection, understanding, presence, hugs which help us dissolve the layers that have built up around the core wound.
Instead when someone reaches out for sugar for example, they get deeper and deeper into fixed loops in their nervous system that require more and more consumption to satisfy…but then there is never any satisfaction…
So it goes something like this:
Event – Trigger – Pain – Desensitisation – Adjustment –
This is the Addiction Merry-Go-Round.
